Another year has gone. A new one is upon us and it’s full of opportunities for transformation and new habits. If your new year’s resolution includes tidying up and organzing your space, we’re here to help!

From the meticulous but rewarding process of home decluttering, to the creative undertaking of DIY home organizations, we want to give you a breakdown of five home organization hacks we intend to invite into our lives this year.

Courtesy of the professionals at Saf Keep Storage, here are five of our best hacks.

#1. Seasonal Clothing Swaps

This simple organization hack will help you stay organized and prepared for the changing seasons with minimal effort.

Let’s start easy: begin by sorting through your wardrobe and separating out all season-specific items such as t-shirts, shorts, sweaters, jackets, and sandals. Then, consider what items you would like to keep in rotation year-round as your “evergreen” items.

“Evergreen” items should remain at the front of your closet or in an easily accessible dresser drawer for convenience. Once you’ve determined which pieces are here for the long haul, store all other seasonal pieces in appropriately labeled storage bins or bags, except, of course, for the clothes you’re wearing for the current season.

To ensure your stored clothes remain fresh and ready for wear when it’s their turn for the spotlight, add fabric conditioners and lavender sachets into each bag or bin before sealing them up tight!

#2. New Labeling System

Take our word for it: there’s nothing more satisfying than a labeling system that just makes sense. Something intuitive, easy, and ideally, colorful (maybe that’s just us).

With the right labeling systems in place, you can save yourself a ton of time and energy. The key is to find the best home organization hack for your needs. New and different labeling systems offer innovative solutions for home organization and might help you think about your home in interesting, transformative ways.

Here’s some of our favorite DIY home organization label hacks:

  • Color-coded labels or boxes. Color-coded labels are great for easy categorization of items. You can assign each family member a color, or designate colors to separate items throughout your home such as kitchen supplies, office materials, and more.
  • Textured adhesive tags. Textured adhesive tags will add a little luxurious flair to your home organization system. These labels are ideal for more fragile items, such as glass containers, plastic, metal, or paper.
  • Custom-drawn art labels. Go the extra mile with your creativity and use markers or colored pencils to turn blank labels into thematically appropriate tags. Fine-tune your organization according to that creative spirit inside of you!

#3. Level Up Wall Space

Are you going about your daily life and just feel…cramped? Like there’s not enough elbow room in your own space? With more and more items piling up, adding vertical storage to maximize wall space could be the home organization hack you need to transform a cluttered floor into an open, breathable space. Getting creative with vertical storage solutions can offer home decluttering solutions for small homes and much-too-busy living areas.

Vertical storage options are simple yet effective ways to keep your belongings organized and out of sight. Shelves, peg boards, hanging baskets, wall-mounted cabinets, and cupboards are all viable solutions for maintaining a clutter-free environment. Utilizing vertical storage can provide additional space that would otherwise go unused (nobody likes blank walls, anyway).

#4. Create Designated Zones

One of the most effective ways to stay on top of tidiness is through designated activity zones within your home. This technique will not only make it easier to keep the house neat, but also give each area its own unique look and purpose.

To create these activity zones in your home, first consider what activities take place in each room, then plan accordingly for them.

For example, if you have a living room that doubles as an office space, separate it into two distinct parts—one for working and one for relaxing—so that you don’t feel like work is always looming. This can do wonders for your productivity during the work day by sparing you from distractions while also maintaining a healthy work-life balance, which is beneficial to your mental health.

#5. Purge Stagnant Items

Organizing your home sometimes requires you to get rid of excess. With the right home decluttering approach, you can quickly and easily remove old clothes, appliances, and other items that you no longer need.

It’s easy to keep things out of sentiment, and we aren’t telling you to abandon the rocking chair you inherited from your grandmother. But you probably don’t need six different shirts that remind you of college, which you never wear anyway.

Start by going through each room in your house, one at a time. Gather items that are old, out of style, broken, or unused. Once you have everything together, sort them into piles for donation, recycling, or trash removal.

It’s also okay to have a pile designated for items you still want to keep. You don’t have to get rid of everything. Instead, if they’re caught in the space between being wanted but still acting as a piece of clutter, you can simply put it into a box or container and place it in storage!

Finally, throw away items that you’ve decided to trash, and take all donations and recyclables to the appropriate locations as soon as possible. Seriously—don’t let bags of clothes sit in your trunk for four months.
